Charlottesville, VA Virginia, USA Book Editing - A reader generally won't trust an author until about two or three chapters in. At this point, if the author and editor have done their jobs well, the reader will relax, enjoy the book, and go on to give it a 5-Star review on Amazon. There are multiple reasons for this 5-Star review:
- The author can write (fiction or nonfiction)
- The author can tell a good story (fiction and, most of the time, yes- nonfiction)
- The author can help the reader with pertinent information (nonfiction)
- The writing is clear, concise, and easy to follow
- There are ZERO grammatical, punctuation, and spelling mistakes
- There are minimal cliche's, run-on sentences, or clunky descriptions
- There is no incoherent or ineffective dialogue
- The book is formatted professionally (See Formatting)
- The book comes with a free toaster (kidding)
When hiring an editor, it's important for the author to understand the potential need for 4 different types of editing:
- Developmental Editing looks at the overall structure and organization of a piece of writing as well as its individual elements: story arc, pacing, character development, structure, point of view, plot, themes, tone and voice, manuscript length. It is generally advised to seek guidance in the developmental editing realm—guidance with macro-editing—before proceeding with the micro-editing that the next types of editing address.
- Line editing is the process of reviewing a manuscript line by line and sentence by sentence where unnecessary text is deleted, confusing text is modified, clarity and flow are confirmed, and dialogue is tightened up—all to ensure the author’s message is delivered as intended.
- Copy editing is the process of ensuring accuracy and consistency in spelling, punctuation, grammar, and syntax as well as capitalization, font, hyphenation, and numerical representation throughout the manuscript.
- Proofreading is the process of scrutinizing a text after line and copy editing have been completed in order to find and correct any remaining errors. It must be done prior to printing or publishing a document.
What you'll get with Book Done For You editing:
- We'll work with you to determine which of the four editing types meets your needs. (For most authors copy editing and proofreading are the minimum. You may elect to start here, and, once the process is underway, your editor may highly recommend line editing as well.)
- We'll assign you an editor. (J. Stewart does developmental editing; A Book Done For You professional editor associate does line editing, copy editing, and proofreading.)
- We'll come up with a plan to share edits, revisions, and versions. (This can get messy, chaotic, and complicated very quickly, so we use a system which streamlines and simplifies this process.)
- We'll provide you with the final edited version of your book in Microsoft Word, PDF, and E-book formats.
